About The Guernsey Battle of Flowers

The Guernsey Battle of Flowers is one of the Channel Islands’ most distinctive summer traditions, combining floral artistry, carnival parades, music, and community celebration. It has been held in Guernsey for well over a century and remains closely tied to the island’s identity.

The festival began in the early 1900s to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Inspired by flower festivals already popular in parts of continental Europe, island organisers created a floral carnival where decorated carts and floats paraded through the streets.

Until the early 1960’s the parade of floats culminated in an actual “battle” when the floats were stripped, and competitors and spectators alike bombarded each other with the flowers. Over the years though, the “battle” became rather too excited. Sometimes not just the flowers were thrown! Nowadays the floats survive to take part in an illuminated parade in the evening which culminates in a firework display.

The Battle of Flowers became a major annual event attracting visitors from the UK and nearby islands. Floats became increasingly elaborate, featuring thousands of fresh flowers or paper flower craftsmanship. The larger floats even incorporated mechanical moving parts and themed costumes and music.

Local parishes, businesses, community groups and generation of families have participated in float-building & costume making to compete for prizes over the years, helping the event to become a celebration of community and creative talent.
Today, the event is held on the Thursday afternoon of the annual North Show with a final “moonlight parade” in the evening.

Although fresh flowers are still used, many floats are decorated in handmade paper blooms.
